For the next instalment in our Inspiring the Next Generation series we spoke with Desmond Cass to find out how he became a professional decorator and why he thinks using quality tools is so important.

Starting his career as an apprentice, Desmond Cass now runs D.Cass and Son - a family painting and decorating business in London that, over the last 65 years, has successfully trained 13 apprentices. The company has been a part of the PDA for the last 50 years and Desmond believes it is absolutely essential to support the next generation of decorators through apprenticeship schemes to ensure a continuous line of highly skilled and qualified decorators.

Desmond understands how important it is to support young people and help them to get a grounding in the industry. He says that undertaking an apprenticeship is key as it enables young people to understand the technicalities of the trade in college and apply the skills on site.

Desmond also advocates the use of quality tools and says that using the right tools for the job enables you to work faster and get far superior results and the perfect finish.
